YIA opens new Domestic Terminal today as part of its Airport Master Plan Development to hone Myanmar’s position as a travel destination
YIA set to boost overall international and domestic connectivity as well as passenger experiences
YANGON – 05 December 2016 – Yangon Aerodrome Company Limited (“YACL”), unveils the next chapter in Myanmar’s aviation services industry with the opening of its latest domestic airport terminal (“T3”) at Yangon International Airport (“YIA”).
In line with its vision to prepare for a future-ready aviation industry in Myanmar, and an expected surge in demand for air services in the coming years, T3, built over a span of 15 months, opens in less than one year after the official opening of the International Terminal T1 in March this year.
Currently a key gateway for international travelers into the country, YIA has significantly increased its existing capacity with the new T3 to handle future demand, and integrates greater handling capabilities with better connectivity and passenger experiences.
Located alongside Myanmar’s busiest International Terminal, T1, near Yangon City, T3 was officially opened this morning.
Future-Readying Myanmar’s Aviation Industry
On the back of recent economic reforms and continued developments, YIA has seen a three-fold growth in passenger traffic over the past five years. The timely completion of T3 will enable Myanmar to handle the fast-growing demand for aviation services in the country in line with the evolving landscape.
Tapping on the experience gained from the construction of International Terminal (T1) – where locals had access to foreign technology, new skillsets, and enjoyed valuable knowledge transfer – T3 is a testament to the strength of Myanmar’s home-grown abilities. T3 was built in line with international standards, and comprised a 90%-local workforce.
To date, YIA’s total employee strength stands at approximately 2,000. This growing employee count will serve to further cultivate and sharpen local skillsets and know-how in Myanmar’s aviation industry.
Offering unparalleled connectivity to domestic destinations, the completion of T3 will have a knock-on effect on other regions in Myanmar which may also see significant investments in local terminals and peripheral infrastructures such as roads, utilities and tourist and business amenities to prepare for the expected growth in business and leisure travelers throughout Myanmar.
An Important Milestone In YIA’s Airport Master Plan Development
As economic reforms are expected to further accelerate demand for aviation services in the country, YIA plans to prudently roll out its Airport Master Plan Development which has been in place since in 2013. The opening of T3 is a milestone achievement in the Master Plan, that aims to eventually serve up to 20 million domestic and international passengers annually. This development also ensures that Myanmar continues to remain relevant by keeping up with passenger demand and honing its position as a highquality and well-connected travel destination.
Designed, constructed and operated in line with international standards, T3, the new domestic terminal offers similar facilities to an international airport terminal – such as a variety of F&B outlets, retail options, business lounges, baggage handling & security systems for a safe and comfortable experience.
Connecting 26 Local Destinations In Myanmar
With a growing number of travelers flying through Yangon, T3 will play a critical role in providing connectivity to the 26 local destinations served by 10 local airlines.
Spanning approximately 44,000 sqm with 38 check-in counters, 4 aerobridges and 2 remote gates, T3 will, for the first time, offer domestic passengers an international-terminal standard of well-curated mix of world-renowned and local retail outlets and food and beverage options.
Operational From 9 December 2016
T3 is operationally ready to serve flights and passengers, with all domestic airlines being scheduled for their inaugural flights this month on 9 December 2016.
YACL Management Said Of The Opening Of T3:
“The completion of T3 represents our continued dedication to playing a key role in preparing Myanmar’s aviation industry for the expected future growth in air passenger traffic. This will ensure our terminal is able to handle the expected increase in air passengers and provide significantly improved service standards and connectivity within Myanmar.”
